What is Spiritual Direction?

  • Do you yearn for God?
  • Do you want to explore new pathways of prayer?
  • Are you facing a decision for which you want to discern God’s call?
  • Do you wonder why God sometimes seems distant?
  • Do you want to better understand the direction and purpose of your life or your work?

If yes, then spiritual direction may be for you. Also called spiritual guidance, spiritual direction is a confidential relationship where you receive help in noticing and responding to God. In human spiritual direction we recognize that our true director is the Holy Spirit.

Because God is in us and around us all the time, a central question in spiritual direction is how we pay attention to these stirrings of God. I listen to you with an ear tuned for the movements of God in your life, occasionally asking questions and offering suggestions. Once we notice what God seems to be doing in your experience, you are then free to decide how you want to respond to God's loving initiatives.

Spiritual direction is one avenue for Christian discipling. It takes inspiration from Jesus, whom people sought for insight into their relationship with God (e.g., Mark 10:17-22, 12:28-34). The ministry of spiritual direction has historically been offered by desert mothers and fathers, nuns and monks, and pastors and laypeople. Well-known spiritual guides have included Anthony, Julian of Norwich, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Ignatius Loyola, and many others.
